Nagorno Karabakh is a remote and beautiful place in the South Caucasus, a land of forest and mountains. The local people were threatened by the presence of enormous quantities of landmines, cluster bombs and unexploded ordnance from the wars of the early 1990s and from an intense conflict in 2020.听
HALO began work in Karabakh in February 1995 training local people to clear their own lands of explosive dangers. We were one of a very small number of international organisations operating in the unrecognised territory, but the vast majority of HALO staff were Karabakhi women and men. They worked diligently in dangerous minefields and in the streets and gardens of their neighbours to keep them safe.
In October 2023, following further military action, the population of Karabakh left their homes for Armenia. HALO established听a base in Goris, Armenia to support our colleagues and their families during an extremely challenging time, providing temporary accommodation, food, transportation and other assistance. We continue to do everything we can to support our colleagues and their families, finding employment opportunities on other HALO programmes around the world for some those able to take them up.
